Organization of the academic year

The academic year is divided into two semesters. The winter semester always starts on October 1st and closes towards the end of January. A one-week break gives time to prepare for the winter exam session which lasts another week or two. Classes begin anew in February and last till the first week of June, when the summer semester ends. At the end of second semester there is the summer exam session. Those who fail this time can take the make-up exams in September. For those who pass, July, August and September are a time of well-deserved holiday. Apart from this, students enjoy a two-week break from classes around Christmas..

The University in the past

As early as 1519 the bishop Jan Lubrański opened the first academy in Poznań. Some time after the Lubrański Academy had been set up, Rev. Jakub Wujek, the first translator of the Bible into Polish, founded a Jesuit College in Poznań. Both institutions existed for over two and a half centuries.

Throughout the 123 years of the Prussian Partition, the idea of creating an institution of higher education in the Wielkopolska region had never vanished. Finally, after Poland had regained independence, on the 7th May 1919 the opening celebration of the Piast University took place. Professor Heliodor Święcicki - a doctor of medicine, a great patriot and a social worker - became its first Rector. In 1920, its name was changed to Poznań University. The school developed rapidly, with five faculties established after six years of its activity. After the year 1939, when the Second World War began, the University professors transferred to the underground. Owing to their devotion and heroism about 2,000 students graduated from the underground University. After the war, in December 1955, the University of Poznań took on Adam Mickiewicz , the greatest Polish poet, as a patron.

The year 1989 and the breakdown of the communist system brought hope of new paths of development for Adam Mickiewicz University. At this time of rapid growth in Poland's economy, the number of University students expanded from just over 13,000 in 1989 to 38,000 in the year 2000.
